Tips For Caring For Your New Convertible's Top

Posted on: 24 February 2016

If you just invested in a new car that has a convertible top, one of the things you need to know is how to properly care for the top. After all, the better the care that your top receives, the longer it is likely to last you. Even if it spends more time down than up, it's still going to need regular cleaning and care. Here are a few tips to help you maintain the top on your convertible car.

Make Sure You Have The Right Supplies

Especially if this is your first convertible, you'll have to invest in the right supplies for the top. You can't use just any cleaner on the top, because some cleaners might damage the fabric and window.

You'll need to have convertible top cleaner, because it's formulated to clean the top without causing wear or fading on the fabric. You can usually choose from several brands either from the dealer where you bought the car or your local auto supply store. Opt for a cleaner that's free of bleach and is biodegradable. Opt for a top protectant, too. That way, you can seal it and protect it from ultraviolet rays.

In addition to the top cleaner, you'll also need a cleaner for the vinyl window. This is essential, because the wrong cleaner could crack, streak or cloud the window. You're also going to need a soft brush to scrub the top with.

Ensure That You Clean It Properly

  • Cleaning the Top - Any time the top is visibly dirty, it should be cleaned. Leave the car in a cool, shady area for a while before you wash it so that the water doesn't evaporate off the top. Spray the top lightly with a garden hose and then apply the cleaner. Scrub gently with the brush, working in small circles. Once clean, rinse it completely with clean water. Apply the protectant, then leave the top up to dry. Don't put the top down until it's completely dry, otherwise the moisture can lead to mold.
  • Cleaning the Windows - Use the vinyl window cleaner and a soft paper towel to clean the window. Use the hose to rinse it thoroughly, then dry it with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.

With the tips presented here, you'll be able to care for the top on your new convertible car with ease. For more care tips, talk with the dealer where you got your new car.
