3 Things Parents Can Do To Keep The Rental Car Clean While On Vacation

Posted on: 23 February 2015

If you're taking the family on a vacation, you'll probably rent a car to get you around. Parents are often surprised at how expensive it can be to rent a car. In fact, sometimes the rental car costs more than lodging or airfare. It's very important that you keep the rental car clean so you can keep the costs down. As a parent of young children, you know that it can be very hard to keep the inside of a vehicle clean, especially when on vacation. Keep reading to learn 3 things you can do to keep the rental car clean while on vacation:

Contain The Trash

Keep a small plastic bag inside the rental car to hold trash. Plastic is best because it will hold liquids and solids. If you'd like something more rigid, use a small paper bag on the outside and put the plastic bag on the inside. Pull the top of the plastic bag out and fold the edges down around the outside of the paper bag. This will keep the bag upright and open, but it is flexible enough to put placed into tight spaces if needed.

Cover The Seats

Keep a large garbage bag or towel on the seat at all times to protect them. Kids can sit directly on the bag or towel. Keep in mind that the garbage bag or towel will move every time the kids get in and out of the rental car, but they should easily go right back into place with a quick adjustment.

If you are traveling with a car seat or booster seat, that's even better. Cover the entire back seat with a large trash bag or towel, and then install the car seats on top of it. This will not only keep your little one from staining the rental car seats with juice or sticky snacks, but the kid's car seat will keep the bag or towel in place at all times.

Cover The Floors

In any vehicle, spills can quickly dribble down off the seat and onto the floor. If the seat is covered with a trash bag or towel, then there are no worries. But you also need to protect the floors of the rental car. This can easily be done by getting another large garbage bag and putting the floor mat inside. Then fold the loose edges of the bag underneath the floor mat and put the mat back into position. Right before you turn the rental car in, you can take out the covered floor mats and tip them over a trash barrel. Then, all the tiny puddles, sticky blobs, crumbs, small pieces of trash, dust, and dirt will fall right into the barrel with the trash bag cover. Finally, put the floor mats back into place and the rental car will look as good as it did when you first got it.

This is a small list of 3 things you can do to keep your rental car looking as good as it did when you first picked it up at the agency. Depending on the ages of your children, you may need to add to these protective measures, or you may not need all of them. But in any case, you will save money on the cost of your vacation car rental because you won't be charged with any cleaning fees. If you have any questions, call an agency such as BMC Auto Rental. They'd be happy to help you.
